What did you struggle with most about returning to work after having your kids?
With my current employer, I started when I was breastfeeding my first child. I asked in the interview and my VP said he’ll make sure they have a space for me and whatever time I need (his wife had been forced to pump in her car). On my first day he followed up to make sure the HR department had found a comfortable place for me. He even offered to let me use his office if I preferred. Now with my second I have a larger pumping space and can go as many times and as often as I please.
What do you find difficult about being a working parent? Finding the balance between work, personal time, time with the kids and being a wife. Women are truly superhero’s.
What do you enjoy about being a working parent? Seeing the excitement on their face when they see me after work. Working to afford little things like surprise gifts and family trips.
After being back at work for some time, have your views about career and family changed? I have an enormous respect for women every where and admiration for my own mother who made it seem easier than it is.
Knowing what you know now, what’s one thing you wish you could go back in time and tell yourself as you were preparing to return to work or getting ramped up in your role?
It’s not the end of the world if something around the house doesn’t get done, or if you have to supplement with formula. If baby is fed, loved and alive you’re all good!
What did you choose for childcare, and how has it been for your family? My mother in law and daycare after 2 years old. Having family with your children is a blessing. Their bond with my MIL is amazing and her support in my breastfeeding journey is crucial to our success. Daycare is great after two; my daughter is able to interact with kids, gain social skills and begin learning.
Anything else you want to share?
Having an active husband makes you fall more in love. It’s wonderful to have a partner in all of this.
